With reference to your despatch No.313 of the

23rd November, 1931, on the subject of the validity of the

marriage of Mr. I. A. Levis, I have the honour to inform

you that marriages between persons neither of whom professes

the Christian religion duly celebrated according to the

personal law and religion of the parties are recognized as

valid in the Colony. The children of such marriages are

regarded as legitimate and the Court grants administration

to the widows or children of such marriages.

2. There is no official registration of such marriages and no record in this case appears in the register kept at the local Jewish Synagogue; I am unable therefore in the absence of the statutory declaration and marriage certificate referred to in the Foreign Office despatch to

express an opinion regarding the validity of this particular

marriage. I am informed on the other hand that the absence

of any record may have been due to an oversight on the part

of the keeper of the register which is as regards the period

in question by no means complete. In the circumstances

therefore, provided that the Foreign Office is satisfied that
